As you plan your journey to Merano, we have a travel recommendation that promises both convenience and stunning scenery.
If you are arriving by air, flying into Munich is a great starting point. From the airport, your next step is to catch the train departing from Munich East station, which is conveniently located not far from the airport.
The journey from Munich to Bozen (Bolzano) takes you through the heart of the Alps and you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Alpine landscape. Upon your arrival in Bozen, you’ll need to make a quick change to continue your journey to Merano. The 40-minute train connection between Bozen and Merano is frequent, with trains departing every half an hour.
Positioned in the heart of Europe, Merano has a good train network, with connecting trains from Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), as well as German Railway (DB).
There are several train connections to Merano, all of which offer a good way to travel this route:
From North:
Munich – Merano/Meran (311 km) via Garmisch – Innsbruck – Brennero/Brenner (A 22 Brennero Freeway, obligatory toll) – Bolzano/Bozen (Exit Bolzano South)
From West:
Zurich – Merano/Meran (273 km) via Landquart – Klosters – Vereinatunnel – Zernez – Ofenpass – Muenster – Taufers in Muenster – Glorenza/Glurns
From East:
Lienz – Merano/Meran (180 km) via San Candido/Innichen – Val Pusteria/Pustertal (State Road 49) – (A 22 Brennero Freeway, obligatory toll) Bolzano/Bozen
From South:
Venice – Merano/Meran (260 km) via Treviso – Trient – Bolzano/Bozen (Exit Bolzano South)
For some of you, a convenient way to travel might be to fly directly to Bolzano with the airline Skyalps, which is 30 minutes away from Merano. In the summer of 2024, the following destinations will be directly served from Bolzano: Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Kassel, Stuttgart, and London Gatwick. Book your flight on the Skyalps website.
AIRPORT SHUTTLE: Südtirol Bus provides a quick, comfortable and value-for-money shuttle service from Merano to the following airports: Innsbruck, Munich, Verona, Bergamo, Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa, Treviso, Venice-Tessera and vice versa.
The shuttle rates vary from €88 – €143 per person/one way, depending on the destination and other factors such as time of day and number of passengers.
Important: As more passengers are booking in the same booking process, the cost per person is reduced. So it makes sense to join forces with other participants before booking.
