How does email fraud work?
In the case of email fraud, fraudsters want to receive information about you and/or your company and try to lure it out of the recipients using scam emails. The information collected can be an organization chart, but it can also be critical information such as usernames and passwords about company resources. First, the attackers collect e-mail addresses – for example from publicly available postings or from social media websites – or guess a company’s e-mail formats such as a.surname@company.com. Then they send emails, pretend to be a service provider, a seller of any kind of stuff or try to impersonate a member of the IT department. In most cases, this will be a very convincing and short text message – including a “Click here” button or the request to reply to this email. Some recipients fall for these scam emails and respond. Sometimes this leads to an actual conversation between the user and the attacker. The attacker then sends a request to the user to disclose information. Since a reciprocal dialogue has already taken place, this often appears innocent.
Example: “service provider” scam emails
We have detected scam activity of a company trying to sell accommodation services to the speakers of our conference. Apparently, they have been collecting information on the speakers from the preliminary programme that were made public on our websites. The only public details were the name of the speakers and their affiliation. The attacker asked in further conversation for sensible date such as credit card information.
From the emails received, we have identified this company as responsible for the scam:
